Human Movement Sciences

The department of Human Movement Sciences provides education for the bachelor of HMS and three master's degree programs. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research in human movement. The research is multidisciplinary; we combine physiology, psychology, mathematics and (bio) mechanics, and have an integrative and translational approach.
Our research is mainly experimental, and focuses on the movement of man in relation to his surroundings and to the musculoskeletal system. This is to examine both the normal and the pathological functioning.
In addition to the fundamental research we do research that focuses on the application of the knowledge we obtained, with the aim of optimizing mobility in for example sport and rehabilitation. Our research is largely funded by parties outside the university, such as NWO, STW, EU, and charities.

Section Coordination dynamics

At the Coordination Dynamics section we aim to understand the coordination between limbs, and coordination between movements and the environment. We do this with the aid of the concepts and tools of the dynamic system theory.

Section Education

The Education section consists of all the teachers of the HMS Department and a number of junior teachers who develop workgroup and practical education and give the first-year courses.

Section Motor Learning & Performance

Our research examines motor control and learning at different stages of development (from infants to the elderly) within sport, rehabilitation, physical education and other performance environments.

Section Neuromechanics

Our research program integrates neurophysiology and biomechanics (neuromechanics) to better understand the neuromusculoskeletal system.

Section Physiology

Within the Physiology section, we focus primarily on improving our performance in healthy people and athletes, and improve mobility of people who, as a result of an accident, illness, disease or old age, have limited moving capabilities.
